Where to start...

Right that's it, I've been back in South Africa 6 weeks and enough is enough, it's time to start my blog. My intention is to write a piece every day. Shouldn't be to difficult as hubby and I both work from home on the internet, so just part of the daily schedule.

We are in the Western Cape, in a lovely typical South African home, pool, mega alarm system (which i had bumped up when I arrived) 8 ft walls at the back and so on. We flew our lovely dogs over here from the UK (stupid expensive, but worth every penny)

Right now we don't have a car, so our outings are limited to the local Checkers, Spar and when we can borrow our brother in laws car a trip to the beach or shopping mall. Because we haven't been here for so long we have no credit history, which makes financing a car all but impossible, but he ho if we have to wait a while and buy cash so be it. Luckily we work on the net, so don't need to travel to work.

On that topic, the internet, or lack of it here is my first bone of contention. Hubby came over before me, so in total has been here over 4 months and we are still waiting for good old Telkom to install a ADS line, it appears that we will have to look for serviced offices with internet on tap, as working like we are on dongles cant go on for ever, its just not cost effective when you spend as much time online as we do. We have an internet marketing company, so we are hoping we are here in time for he much delayed internet boom, and the tools we learnt in the UK put us above the local competition.

Dongles, now there's another interesting point, all this pay as you go, bundle rubbish. Thank god hubby understands it or we would never get online. Online sales, I don't think so, the post office is still a mess, post boxes still on the pavement (very secure)so people just don't order stuff online like you would in the UK. Without the infrastructure, the whole model goes tits up.

SABC, oh my hat, what is that all about? the endless repeats, Who the hell watches judge Judy anymore? Ok we were spoilt in the UK with goodness knows how many channels on sky but BBC wasn't that bad was it? The soapies take the cake, trying so hard to be politically correct they have completely lost the plot.

The weather, well I'm new to the Cape, Jhb girl through and through, but a good friend of mine who lives in Jhb summed it up perfectly, the Cape is like a baby, if its not windy its wet or both. She was dead right. But I must say the last few days have been glorious, even working on my tan again.

ADT Security, back to my point about bumping up the houses security system, we are now the proud owners of breakers on all doors that lead to the front, back or garage. 2 fixed panic alarms and 2 remotes with great red buttons on them. I do my nightly ritual of setting the passives, per room (so the dogs don't set it off by accident) then and only then do I relax. ?Safe (we hope) in our self imposed prison. Hubby just nods and humors my paranoia, cant help it, this country still scares the bejesus out of me.

The area we live in has white, blacks, colored and Indians, Ive seen them when we walk the dogs, all of us behind our high walls... no one really talks, we all just nod and smile.

Rugby, wow what a pleasure, the tri nations has just ended, what a pleasure and feeling of pride to put on your Springbok Jersey and go watch the match in the dodgy but festive pub down the road. What a spirit when the boks are playing, so much more then even the British football lot.

Ok well that's enough for now, loads more to write tomorrow, will also start taking my camera with me every where to capture some truly South African stuff..
